About This Project
Every home has a future, and the split-level residence in Wilmington, MA, is no exception. Mindful of both a limited budget and future resale value, this renovation was thoughtfully planned and executed. In keeping with my design philosophy, I incorporated timeless and neutral materials throughout, including neutral paint colors, flooring, and distinctive elements like patterned shower tile, modern matte black cabinet hardware, picket backsplash tile, and batten board details.
While we found more affordable alternatives to some impactful design items (see below), splurging to open up a wall can make an enormous impact on how your home feels, its functionality and how potential buys view the home. In this case, we were able to open up the wall between the kitchen and formal dining room. This allowed the entire first floor to feel open and airy, while also providing the functionality of an eat-in kitchen, plus a dining room.
Just like opening up a wall can add value, so does finishing a basement. Any time you can add square footage to a home you are not only adding space for you and your family to enjoy, but it increases the value of your home. In this case we created a large open area that could be used as a playroom, den, home office or more. We also created a large closet for a concealed laundry area, plus added a walk out door with a window to increase the natural light.
Additional (semi) splurges included some semi-custom bookshelves and storage bench to make sense of useless space in the master bedroom due to a the slanted gambrel roofline, an impactful yet classic and neutral kitchen backsplash, plus quality door knobs - I always feel like no one ever regrets buying affordable, yet quality door knobs. The touch and feel and instinctual quality from room to room carries throughout the house. I always say, a home is like an outfit. They say you should wear an outfit with a mix of affordable and expensive items so ones outfit doesn’t appear to be cheap - the same is for a budget renovation!
